TTAP rejects PTI claims of no advance notice for 10,000-strong protest outside Adiala jail – Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: While the PTI leadership on Tuesday distanced itself from the call to gather 10,000 people outside Adiala jail, saying that Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai had not informed them, TTAP spokesperson rejected the claim.
PTI founder Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan claimed a day earlier that she had been approached by Achakzai and told that 10,000 people could gather outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Prison – where the party founder is incarcerated – if a deadline was set.
“It has been decided that we will hold a sit-in from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.,” she said.
However, PTI parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Shahid Khattak, speaking to the media on the same day, rejected the suggestion that such an arrangement had been made.
“Mahmood Khan Achakzai did not inform us that 10,000 people had to be brought together; we could have brought them together. Even I could have brought 200 people,” he said.
Khattak added that Achakzai should also have informed the party about the planned rally so that it could mobilize people.
On Wednesday, TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai rejected Khattak’s claims about planned protests outside the prison.
“PTI leaders and members have repeatedly asked Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai to announce a specific date and time for a protest or sit-in outside Adiala Jail. They argued that a fixed timetable would enable them to mobilize and bring a large number of supporters to the venue,” he said in a statement.
He further claimed that Achakzai conveyed the proposal to Aleema and she accepted the suggestion of holding a protest outside Adiala jail at a predetermined time.
“At a joint parliamentary meeting of the Senate and the National Assembly held at Parliament House on June 11, attended by PTI parliamentary leaders, including President Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Parliamentary Leader in the National Assembly Shahid Khattak, the participants were informed that Aleema Khan had approved the proposal for a planned protest outside Adiala Prison,” Akhunzada said.
According to a statement released by TTAP, participants in the meeting were informed that Aleema had decided that the protest scheduled for Tuesday would end at a designated time.
Akhunzada claimed that the discussions and decisions were shared with the PTI parliamentary leadership and expressed concern over Khattak’s subsequent remarks.
Imran – jailed since August 5, 2023 for concealing details of Toshakhana’s gifts – is serving a 14-year prison sentence at Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi in a £190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust affair.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has allowed the incarcerated ex-prime minister to have meetings twice a week – on Tuesdays and Thursdays – with his family, lawyers and other associates. Despite this order, Imran has not been allowed to meet visitors for several months.
His eye disease – right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) – appeared in late January. His first medical procedure was performed on January 24, followed by a second dose on February 24 and a third dose on March 23.
Over the past few months, the government and the opposition have engaged in a blame game, with the latter accusing the former of a lack of transparency by failing to ensure proper treatment for Imran and not allowing his personal doctors access to him. The government denies these allegations.
The opposition also demanded that the former prime minister be transferred to Shifa International Hospital, treated in the presence of his personal doctors and allowed to meet his family.
