China’s Xi says he “firmly supports” Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty
Chinese leader Xi Jinping pledged to support Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty on Tuesday, state media reported, during his meeting with President Min Aung Hlaing in Beijing.
China is Myanmar’s most crucial ally and a rare lasting partner after Min Aung Hlaing’s 2021 coup that toppled the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, prompting Western countries to cut ties with the Southeast Asian nation.
Beijing has become a key player in the civil war sparked by the coup, and has also loudly backed recent polls that ruled out Suu Kyi’s party and gave a clear victory to pro-military MPs – who elected Min Aung Hlaing as president.
Xi said China “firmly supports” Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as he met Min Aung Hlaing at Beijing’s lavish Great Hall of the People on Tuesday after a welcome ceremony, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
The Myanmar leader’s trip – his second state visit since he took office as a civilian president in April – comes as ties with Beijing have frayed in recent years over internet scam hubs along the countries’ shared border areas that have targeted Chinese citizens, analysts say.
Beijing “supports the new government in striking a balance between development and security to find a correct development path, suited to its national conditions and enjoying the support of the people,” Xi told Min Aung Hlaing.
The two countries, added the Chinese leader, must continue to “harshly crack down” on telecommunications fraud, online gambling and drug trafficking.
Xi also praised relations between China and Myanmar, saying the two countries have “stayed united through thick and thin.”
“China supports all parties in Myanmar in their efforts to advance peace and reconciliation through dialogue,” he said.
Min Aung Hlaing landed in Beijing on a red carpet Monday, according to images shared by his office, and spent the first hours of his five-day trip touring the Beijing Aerospace City, the center of China’s space program.
He is also expected to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and top lawmaker Zhao Leji.
Beijing is a key supplier of equipment to Myanmar’s military and has also negotiated two historic truces with two of the most powerful rebel factions that once challenged it in border regions with China.
Even though Myanmar has been massively impoverished by the civil war, it has also become a major global supplier of mined rare earth minerals, which is vital to China’s production of renewable energy technologies.
