North Korean leader criticizes Japan for turning into ‘war state’
BEIJING (Kyodo) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticized Japan as turning into a “war state” in a speech during a three-day meeting held through Monday, according to state media.
“Japan, a defeated country in Asia, has openly transformed itself into a war state by using the current troubling circumstances as an opportunity to throw off all the shackles preventing it from becoming a military power,” he said, the Korean Central News Agency reported Tuesday.
“This provokes a strong reaction and serious concerns from the international community,” he added in the closing speech of a meeting of the ruling party.
This is believed to be the first time Kim has referred to “attempts to become a military power” and “militarism” in his criticism of Japan.
During his visit to Pyongyang earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping voiced his opposition to attempts to “revive militarism” at a welcome banquet hosted by Kim, with his remarks apparently aimed at Japan.
In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara declined to comment on Kim’s remarks but said Japan’s “exclusively defense-oriented” policy remained unchanged and that it maintained only the minimum capabilities necessary for self-defense.
“Claims that Japan is becoming a military power or reviving militarism are unfounded,” Kihara, the government’s top spokesman, said at a news conference, urging Pyongyang to fully implement U.N. Security Council resolutions banning the country’s nuclear and missile activities.
Kim also criticized the United States and South Korea for “extremely aggravating the situation on the Korean Peninsula” through the modernization of their armed forces, military exercises and espionage activities, and pushed for a faster build-up of national defense capabilities.
“The United States’ indiscriminate and authoritarian practices have had a dangerous impact on its satellite forces,” he said, apparently referring to Japan and South Korea. “Reality once again proves the correctness of all our political choices and the path we have followed.”
He promised that with nuclear technology as the basis, “larger, innovative and encouraging projects would be implemented at an increasing pace,” the report said.
Kim set “tasks to dynamically carry out work to increase powerful defense assets, without pause, in our own way and with the aim of overtaking the world,” KCNA said.
As for South Korea, Kim said it was “essential to fully adhere to the principle of fighting the enemy” set out by the ruling party, which has defined the South as “the most hostile state.”
The speech was delivered at a plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
The gathering also decided to dismiss Kim Jae Ryong as a member of the party’s Politburo presidium, party secretary and department director, KCNA said without explaining why. The former prime minister became a member of the party’s highest decision-making body in February.
