PTI attacks Adiala prison administrator after refusal of another meeting with Imran – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: PTI founder Imran Khan’s sisters and other party leaders were once again blocked from meeting him at Adiala jail in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, as the party lashed out at the jail administration, saying it had misled the court over the power of attorney documents of the former prime minister and his wife.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) allowed Imran to meet his family, lawyers and other associates twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Despite this order, the ex-prime minister was largely prevented from meeting visitors for several months as the court’s directives were not implemented.

Imran’s sisters and PTI leaders arrived at Adiala jail in the morning, but were not allowed to meet the incarcerated former prime minister.

Speaking to reporters outside the jail, Aleema recalled that initially, Imran’s meetings with party leaders were banned, after which his family members were also stopped from meeting him.

PTI general secretary Salman Akram Raja said a large number of people were arriving at Adiala jail every week, despite pressure and obstacles, and maintained that the PTI founder’s family had the right to meet him in jail.

Lawyer Awais Younas Chaudhry, who is submitting the lists of people intending to meet Imran, told Dawn that all the leaders whose names had been provided to the Adiala prison administration, as well as Imran’s sisters, arrived at the prison on Tuesday, but were not allowed to meet the PTI founder.

Malik Yasir Patwali, senior vice-president of PTI North Punjab, told Dawn that since Adiala jail was located in Punjab, wing president Malik Taimoor Masood ensured that a large number of workers reached the premises by 3:30 p.m.

“Although it was the 7th Muharram on Tuesday, an overwhelming number of leaders and workers visited Adiala jail. We decided to continue increasing pressure to allow the meeting with Imran,” he said.

While Imran’s sisters were still sitting outside the jail, the party leaders had started leaving late in the evening.

PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram told Dawn that Tuesday’s allotted meeting hour ended without Imran Khan’s sisters being allowed to meet him despite prior arrangements.

Proxy controversy

In a statement, Akram also condemned what he called the Adiala Prison administration’s persistent dissemination of “misleading” claims regarding Imran and Bushra Bibi’s proxy documents.

A day earlier, the Adiala superintendent told the IHC that the lawyer of the PTI founder and his wife tried to mislead the court regarding the signing of the power of attorney in the Al Qadir Trust corruption case, claiming that they had deliberately not received it.

Akram said Imran’s legal team, including lawyer Salman Safdar and others, had visited the prison several times in recent weeks and sent several official communications, including by mail, only to be turned away empty-handed each time.

He said more than 20 power of attorney documents had been sent to the prison service over the past six months, but no meaningful response had been provided until a contempt petition was filed with the IHC on June 15.

“Even then, the compliance came just days before the contempt hearing and was deliberately partial, offering only Imran Khan’s document while withholding that of Bushra Bibi. This selective and late action was rightly rejected by the legal team,” he said.

Imran – jailed since August 5, 2023 for concealing details of Toshakhana’s gifts – is serving a 14-year prison sentence at Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi in a £190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust affair.

His eye disease – right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) – was discovered in late January and is receiving treatment provided by the government.

The government and opposition have engaged in a blame game, with the latter accusing the former of lack of transparency by failing to ensure proper treatment for Imran and not allowing his personal doctors access to him. The government denies these allegations.

The opposition also demanded that the former prime minister be transferred to Shifa International Hospital, treated in the presence of his personal doctors and allowed to meet his family.
