Trump names former Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer as ICE director

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he was nominating Lance Schroyer, a former Oklahoma state trooper, to be the next director of Immigration, Customs and Enforcement.

Trump said on his Truth Social platform that his new pick for immigration enforcement agency is a former U.S. Marine and a “PATRIOT with real operational experience.” He called Schroyer “a proven leader with DECADES of experience containing the worst of the worst.”

Schroyer is from the same home state as new Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, a former congressman. Earlier this month, Mullin brought Schroyer on stage at a National Sheriffs’ Association event, calling him a “good friend of mine” and noting that DHS had recently hired him.

On Saturday, Mullin quickly praised Schroyer in a statement highlighting the former soldier’s 29-year career and his work with federal and state partners on a U.S. immigration control program.

“President Trump made an excellent choice, and I am confident that Lance’s strong leadership and first-hand experience will enable the men and women of ICE to deport criminal illegal aliens, secure the homeland, and protect the American people,” Mullin said in an article on X.

If confirmed, Schroyer will lead ICE at a time when public mood has soured over Trump’s immigration crackdown, which has sent federal immigration agents into U.S. cities to round up immigrants. These raids raised tensions and led to clashes between protesters and law enforcement, leading to the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis earlier this year.

Trump returned to the White House with the promise of mass deportations, and ICE has been a key implementer of that vision. The agency is experiencing massive growth following a one-time $75 billion infusion last year, which saw the hiring of 12,000 agents and an increase in detention capacity.

Mullin, who took office in March, has promised to keep his department out of headlines and has signaled a softer tone on immigration, although he is expected to align with the president’s priorities on mass deportations.

Claire Trickler-McNulty, a former senior ICE official, said previously confirmed ICE directors were often attorneys, although some state and local law enforcement officials were also appointed. She said his background in Oklahoma suggests Mullin likely had influence on the choice.

“I think given the attention on ICE, he wants to feel like he has someone he can trust,” she said in an interview.

John Torres, another senior ICE official, said Schroyer faces an uphill climb to Senate confirmation, but that his experience at the state and local level rather than the federal level could help.

“He’s not going to have that kind of baggage, where they’re going to look back and say, oh, well, he worked for this administration or that administration,” Torres said.

Schroyer’s appointment comes after former ICE Director Todd Lyons resigned in late May. David Venturella, a former executive at a private prison operator, is acting director of the agency. Venturella is expected to remain acting director until Schroyer is confirmed by the Senate, according to a DHS official speaking on condition of anonymity.

ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed director since the Obama administration, due to political polarization around the agency and immigration policy.
