Police deny FLP demand for special security at Minister Charan Jeath Singh’s farm

Police have denied claims by the Fiji Labor Party that a police caravan was set up outside Public Enterprises Minister Charan Jeath Singh’s sugarcane farm in Waiqele, Labasa.

This comes as the FLP questions whether Singh is getting special protection at taxpayers’ expense when there are more than 3,000 sugarcane farms in Labasa.

They ask if this is the case, why is a special privilege given to the Minister by the Fiji Police.

The FLP claims that three police officers have been on duty there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a month and asks how much this costs the taxpayer.

They say Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu must explain to Labasa farmers why this special protection is being given to the minister at taxpayers’ expense for a farm that is his personal property and does not belong to the government.

The party also demands that Tudravu explain to the nation why the police are not present in force to provide similar surveillance on the farms of other farmers in Labasa.

FLP adds that Charan Jeet Singh is a successful businessman and can afford to hire a private security company to guard his farm if he is so worried.

Responding to questions from fijivillage News, police said the caravan was in the compound rented by a police officer.

They say police are patrolling the area due to the increase in cane burning.

Police add that the trailer is a resting place for officers who patrol the sugarcane fields and is in an enclosure where they can access water and toilets.
