Donald Trump plans to resume war with Iran and prefers talks

US President Donald Trump has considered returning to all-out war with Iran, but currently prefers to stick to diplomatic negotiations and one-off strikes, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing US sources familiar with the discussions.

According to the report, Trump had several conversations with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine about additional strikes, but instead chose to continue negotiations.

Although their conversations reportedly focused on “finishing the job,” as some officials described it, the president believed that a return to full-scale war would likely derail diplomatic efforts, particularly regarding the issue of nuclear disarmament.

Trump also said he agreed with continuing negotiations with Iran beyond the Aug. 18 deadline for a nuclear deal, while ordering limited one-time strikes in response to any Iranian violations of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries, according to the WSJ.

However, Trump has not yet made a final decision to avoid returning to war, the outlet reported.

A White House official said that Trump still prefers to take the diplomatic route and that the Iranian regime would be wise to seize the opportunity to come to terms and reach an amicable deal with the United States, according to the WSJ; Trump maintains that the negotiations are successful and that the memorandum of understanding is respected, but he keeps military options in his pocket in case diplomacy fails.

“They agree on everything I want, and they have to do it… Otherwise, we go back and do what we have to do,” the president said last Wednesday, following a meeting with Senate Republicans at the US Capitol.

Diplomatic efforts continue, after the two countries agreed to 60 days of negotiations.

A US delegation, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, arrived in Doha for negotiations through Qatari mediators. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio also led diplomatic efforts with Iran.

“If they’re ready to change, we’re ready to change, too; if they’re not ready to change, we still basically hold all the cards, and I think that’s a good place to be,” the vice president said in an interview on HBO’s “Real Time” on June 26.

“If it is prepared to abandon its long-term nuclear ambitions, then the United States is prepared to fundamentally transform our relationship with this country,” he said.

CENTCOM and IRGC in direct communication, but ‘Iran has not been cooperative at all’

Energy Secretary Chris Wright, however, said that “Iran has not yet been cooperative at all” on Fox News on Tuesday.

The Islamic regime has said it will not accept restrictions of any kind on its nuclear program, although Trump insisted he was already committed to dismantling it, according to the WSJ.

The president has repeatedly threatened a return to all-out war, and recent escalations have resulted in tit-for-tat strikes between the two nations, in violation of the ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

Trump has also repeatedly refused to authorize large-scale operations since the initial April 8 ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, according to U.S. officials, despite his threats to destroy Iranian civilization and seize the country’s oil reserves.

Despite the apparent impasse, diplomatic progress has been made.

The United States and Iran have established a direct line of communication between the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in an effort to avoid a diplomatic crisis and a return to direct conflict.

According to the WSJ, White House officials said that “the channel for disconfrontation is open and already being used by both sides,” despite the diplomatic impasse.
