Donald Trump has made more than $1 billion from his crypto businesses since returning to the White House, according to recent financial disclosures.

Amid questions of conflicts of interest, more than 400 Americans expressed feelings of outrage, disgust and despair toward their president. They responded to a call from the Guardian for their views on Trump’s fortune.

According to a 927-page document released Tuesday by the US Office of Government Ethics, the US president earned a total of more than $2.2 billion last year. The Guardian asked Americans for their views on the multibillion-dollar expansion of Trump’s fortune during his time in office. More than 400 people responded to express their concerns about corruption and greed in the White House. They compared Trump’s billions to Americans’ daily struggles as inflation and the cost of living continue to rise.

“Trump cares about two things, and two things only: himself and money,” said Kathe Rhoades, a retired technical writer in Arlington, Massachusetts. “Why the United States apparently has no laws against the president and his family, who are raking in millions of dollars through shady dealings at home and abroad, is completely beyond me. »

Brad Windsor, a 70-year-old retired firefighter from Ojai, Calif., who registered as an independent voter, was also concerned about the lack of safeguards against Trump’s business dealings while in office.

“This is blatant corruption, as are many of his other business and stock transactions. Congress should act to make this illegal,” he said.

Daniel Oberhauser, a 47-year-old government worker in Saint Paul, Minnesota, said Trump’s soaring fortunes were “depressing and exhausting.” Oberhauser said he feels penalized by rising costs, even as a self-described member of the middle class.

“I’m one of the lucky ones, and I’m still counting pennies while my president makes billions while stomping on the backs of Americans,” he said.

Jay Deshpande, a 22-year-old Indian-American, felt discouraged as a student looking for work when he learned that Trump had earned more than two billion dollars.

“His income is ridiculously high and speaks to the level of corruption and greed that defines Trump’s presidency. For a man who promised to be with the people, he has proven time and time again that he only cares about himself and his robber baron friends,” he said.

Mark Boettcher, a 60-year-old pediatrician from Janesville, Wis., said frustration with the Trump administration’s actions and “the American health care system, insurance failures, resistance to vaccination” led him to take early retirement. He found the contrast between Trump’s extreme wealth and the difficulty many Americans have in accessing health care “obscene.”

“It is embarrassing that our system allows such corruption and wealth to be exploited by the richest 1%, on the backs of children who do not receive proper education and health care,” he said.

Andrea Jacoby Brandy, 67, a mother of three and grandmother of five in Perrysburg, Ohio, described Trump as “greedy and cruel” for raking in billions while cutting health care with his “big, beautiful bill.”

“The idea that Donald Trump is profiting from the government he oversees is disgusting,” she said.

Millie, a substitute teacher in Colorado, viewed Trump’s business dealings as worthy of the “billionaire caste.”

“Like other members of his caste, he has absolutely no concern for the financial means or financial situation of those who elected him,” she said. “We will not get the government we want, but the one we deserve, as Mr. Trump does what his caste does: take.

Linda Stuart, a 73-year-old retired science teacher from Texas, worries whether American democracy could survive the growing divide between the haves and have-nots.

“As we struggle to pay our bills, buy our gas, pay our rent, desperately search for insurance we can afford, and constantly worry about whether or not we will have Social Security, it is sickening and disgusting to see how Trump and his family are lining their pockets,” she said.

Laurie Rivera, a librarian in New Mexico, worried that the weakening of democratic institutions would harm her children’s futures.

“I fear that my children will inherit a compromised democracy, and that gives their children a very painful image of humanity,” she said.

Elise, a 21-year-old medical student who describes herself as a “farm girl” from Nebraska, said President Trump’s high gas and grocery prices and cuts to rural health care have significantly disadvantaged her family, all of whom voted for Trump. She said her father and brother suffered from a lack of access after an accident and a psychotic episode. Amid her family’s struggles, she said Trump’s benefits left a bitter taste in her mouth.
