Narendra Modi’s visit to Melbourne: Australia investigates online menace, traces intellectual property
Australian Federal Police are investigating an online death threat aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi just days before his planned visit to Melbourne on July 9, according to Australian media. Investigators identified an IP address linked to the social media post, according to reports.
The threat appeared under a Facebook post promoting the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community event, which is scheduled to take place at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on July 9 during the Prime Minister’s visit to Australia, according to a report by The Australia Today.
The comment was posted by an account using the name Abu Mustafa (translated) and read: “the stadium roofs better close during the event or he will come to Australia for his death.”
Australia Today reported that the matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police the same day the comment appeared online.
Citing sources close to the investigation, the publication says agents have identified the IP address associated with the message and are examining the circumstances surrounding the message. The authorities are also assessing whether criminal offenses have been committed.
The Australian Federal Police have not yet publicly commented on the investigation.
Australian media have noted that threats directed at visiting government leaders are treated with the utmost seriousness by Australian law enforcement. Security measures for large international visits typically involve multiple agencies, including the Australian Federal Police, state police and specialist protective security units.
The alleged threat comes days before Prime Minister Modi’s official visit to Australia, where he is expected to participate in bilateral engagements as well as community events, including the Melbourne rally.
