Modern mineral analysis laboratory to be built in Kenya after agreement with Indonesia

The Kenyan government is set to build a state-of-the-art minerals analysis laboratory following an agreement with Indonesia on capacity building in the country’s mining sector.

This modern laboratory is part of the memorandum of understanding signed last year between the two countries to boost the mining sector.

Indonesia’s top mining official, Adriani Kusumawardani, is leading a delegation that is in the country on a three-day visit starting Tuesday for a meeting to set a framework for the construction of the laboratory.

The plan to build a state-of-the-art mineral testing laboratory and enable Indonesia to help Kenya build capacity in its mining sector was sealed in a memorandum of understanding signed in August last year during Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s state visit to Nairobi.

Mines, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the MoU covered mining, geology collaboration, laboratory modernization, testing and sampling and capacity building.

“As a ministry, we have prioritized testing and sampling as a key area that will grow the mining sector in our country,” he said.

Technology Acquisition

He noted that the country’s laboratories are substandard and the collaboration will lead to acquisition of required technology, experience and capacity building.

Mvurya said this would lead to an upgrade of mining laboratories to international standards.

“We announced the upgrading of Madini House here in Nairobi and the establishment of eight additional laboratories in the region. The MoU will help us realize our dreams of having an ISO certified laboratory here in Kenya,” Mvurya said.

He spoke at the opening of the three-day meeting in Nairobi on Tuesday, when he received government officials and mining investors from Indonesia.

Indonesian Minerals and Coal Directorate State Secretary Rita Susilawati said her government was committed to working with the Kenyan government.

“Indonesia is committed to working with Kenya to accelerate the growth of the mining sector and we believe we can help each other for future generations,” Susiwati said.

The meeting discussed the commencement of the implementation of the MoU and the establishment of an international standards testing and certification laboratory in Kenya.

“In geology, we are looking at the whole field of mapping and grounding in the field and how we can share our experiences and technologies so that we can benefit from Indonesian experiences,” Mvurya said.

He announced that Kenya would work with Indonesia to develop relevant policies, regulations and laws that will boost the mining sector and consequently the economy.
