Legendary Kapil Dev has expressed deep sadness for his former rival cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who continues to be incarcerated at Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi amid concerns over his deteriorating health.

According to reports, 1992 World Cup-winning skipper Imran lost around 85 percent of his vision in his right eye due to alleged medical negligence during his detention.

“I feel very sad for Imran Khan. I don’t know what he did, whether it was good or bad. I just want to say he was a great player, he may have made mistakes but that is no way to treat someone who was their former prime minister, that was my plea all along,” Kapil said in a conversation with Vikrant Gupta on Aaj Tak.

“I don’t know the law, I don’t know what action is being taken against him. But what I do know is that he was a great cricketer for his country and he was prime minister, so there must be some ethics, but that’s not the case and that’s why I feel bad.

“Imran Khan worked very hard for 20 years to become Prime Minister. He had something in him that he wanted to give back to the country,” he added.

Imran Khan sentenced to 14 years in prison

In February this year, as many as 14 former international captains came together to write a letter ‘Former International Cricket Captains’ Appeal’ to the Pakistani government demanding fair treatment for Khan.

The letter was signed by Kapil, Sunil Gavaskar, Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh and John Wright.

Khan, imprisoned since August 2023, was sentenced last year to 14 years in prison in a corruption case.

In the letter, the group of former captains demanded proper medical care, transparent legal procedures and dignified treatment for the 73-year-old.

“We were just saying that the treatment should be properly administered. We don’t know what the law is in this country, but we are only asking that the treatment be appropriate for him.

Kapil also revealed that he was invited to Khan’s swearing-in ceremony after he became the Prime Minister of Pakistan, which he refused due to the current political situation.

“At that time, India’s relations (with Pakistan) were not very good, so we don’t want to go there. If someone invites you to the prime minister’s inauguration ceremony, it’s a treat, it’s an honor, it’s respect. But at the same time, you don’t want to go against your country.”
