President Prabowo welcomes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, begins state visit that strengthens Indonesia-India strategic partnership
President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto on Monday (07/06/2026) welcomed the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Indonesia, which marked the close ties between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in Indonesia was scheduled to pay a state visit that lasted three days.
As a mark of respect, the plane carrying the Indian Prime Minister was specially escorted by 3 F-16 fighter jets and 2 Sukhoi fighter jets when it entered Indonesian airspace. The plane carrying PM Modi landed at around 17:20 WIB at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta.
Welcoming President Prabowo directly under the stairs of the plane displayed state honors that showed Indonesia’s closeness and respect to India. Under the stairs of the plane, the two leaders shook hands and chatted while giving each other warm smiles.
After that, the two leaders marched side by side in front of the guard of honor accompanied by the instrumental music of the band and the roar of 6 cannon salvos.
Also present to welcome Prime Minister Modi were Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Shri Sandeep Chakravorty, Indian Ambassador to ASEAN Shri Srinivas Gotru and Indian Defense Attaché to Indonesia Captain Shiv Kumar.
The welcoming atmosphere was made even more lively with the presentation of Indonesian dances accompanied by traditional music as a symbol of hospitality and the richness of Indonesian culture. PM Modi seemed to enjoy and appreciate the dance performance.
The presence of the two men throughout the welcome procession at the airport reflects the warm personal relationship and mutual respect between the two leaders.
This state visit constitutes an important momentum to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Indonesia and India in various fields. While in Indonesia, Prime Minister Modi is expected to undergo a series of state agendas with President Prabowo, including an official welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, bilateral meetings, as well as discussions on various strategic cooperation opportunities of mutual interest.
The visit also holds historical significance as it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second visit to Indonesia after his visit in 2018. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1951, Indonesia and India have continued to build an increasingly close partnership as two major democracies in Asia, with cooperation spanning trade, investment, defence, maritime security, energy, technology, education and people-to-people relations.
