Jokowi opens voice regarding buffalo head trampling procession, asking not to be linked to politics

ALONE, LIVE Jogja – The controversy of the procession of stepping on the head of a buffalo during the presentation of the traditional title to the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) continues to be a topic of public conversation.
Responding to various speculations that have emerged, Jokowi stressed that this ritual is purely a tradition of the traditional community in Lampung and is not linked to political interests.
Jokowi made this assertion when meeting at his private residence in Sumber, Solo, Central Java, Wednesday (7/7/2026). He said the procession he participated in was part of the respect given by the indigenous people of Lampung as part of the series of honorary degrees awarded.
“This is a form of respect from the indigenous people of Lampung. A form of respect from the Kedatun Palace of Lampung Kingdom,” Jokowi told reporters at his residence in Sumber, Solo, Tuesday (7/7/2026).
According to Jokowi, traditional traditions from various regions in Indonesia constitute cultural heritage that must be respected. He therefore asked the public not to rush to link each traditional procession to political dynamics.
“And don’t drag everything into the political realm, often that doesn’t hold water. We have to continue to respect customs, continue to respect local wisdom, continue to respect our cultures, because our culture is very diverse,” he said.
Jokowi also responded to the opinion of a number of parties who linked the buffalo head in the procession to the bull head which is identical to the PDIP symbol.
According to him, this interpretation is incorrect because the ritual has long been part of the traditions of indigenous peoples.
“It’s a traditional ritual, again it’s a traditional ritual that hasn’t been done once or twice, but hundreds of times,” he stressed.
The procession involving walking on the head of a buffalo became a highlight after the video of Jokowi receiving an honorary degree in Lampung circulated widely on social media. The broadcast sparked various reactions, including speculation linking it to a political symbol.
For information, Jokowi received an honorary title from Kedatun Palace of Lampung Kingdom during a visit to Lampung on Saturday (27/6/2026).
