At least 28 people killed in fire that ravages China shoe factory | Regulatory News

At least 28 people have been killed in a fire at a shoe factory in southeast China, according to state media.
The fire broke out around midday (0400 GMT) on Thursday in the city of Jinjiang, Fujian province. Local media named the site as the Huiteng Shoe Factory located in Jiangtou Village.

Firefighters were trying to reach people trapped inside as President Xi Jinping warned of “significant losses”.
“The cause of the accident must be identified as soon as possible and … those responsible must be strictly held accountable,” Xi said.
The official Xinhua news agency reported a preliminary death toll of 28.
There were 237 factory workers and two visitors in the building when the fire broke out. Authorities evacuated 213 people, two of whom were pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. Another 26 people reported missing were later confirmed dead, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Images shared online showed a multi-storey building engulfed in thick black smoke. A number of people trapped by the fire are visible on the roof.
More than 180 firefighters and rescue workers were dispatched to the scene as well as 35 emergency vehicles. According to local media, most of the open flames were extinguished by early evening.
The Ministry of Emergency Management called for an “all-out” effort to extinguish the fire, search for survivors and treat the injured.
Many materials used to make shoes are highly flammable. According to an official, the factory contained such products, which likely caused the fire to spread quickly. Initial assessments indicate that the fire broke out on the ground floor.
Industrial accidents are common in China due to lax safety standards and poor enforcement, which some blame on corruption among those responsible for ensuring compliance.
Beijing launched a nationwide campaign to eliminate fire hazards in high-rise buildings in November after a major fire ripped through a residential complex in Hong Kong, killing 168 people. It was one of the deadliest residential fires in the world.
In the first three quarters of 2024, China recorded more than 13,400 workplace accidents, resulting in 12,804 deaths.
