US reveals revised bill to impose 100% India tariffs on Russian oil
On Tuesday, US senators unveiled a revised version of the Russia sanctions bill, which would impose 100% tariffs on five countries, including India, on their purchases of Russian oil.
This version softens an earlier threat of a proposed 500% tariff.
The bill, supported by Republicans, Democrats and the White House, aims to sanction Russian officials and pressure countries like India and China to reduce their dependence on Russian energy.
If passed, the bill would impose tariffs on major buyers of Russian oil.
The top five Russian energy buyers are India, China, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan.
Indian imports of Russian oil have long been a point of contention with the United States.
In 2025, the American president imposed additional customs duties of 25% on India on the purchase of Russian crude, thus causing significant tensions on diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Washington.
India has since diversified its oil imports to Venezuela, but has also maintained that India’s policy towards Russian oil is based on “cost and availability”.
In June, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar rejected criticism from Western countries at an event in Helsinki. Jaishankar accused the United States of hypocrisy over Russian oil, saying “the United States specifically asked India to buy Russian oil to help stabilize global markets.”
“After imposing tariffs on us last year on the purchase of Russian oil, the United States then lifted its sanctions on Russian oil. Let’s not pretend that there is any great principle at stake here,” he said.
The proposed US bill comes at a time when India and the US are negotiating the first tranche of a bilateral trade deal.
Experts and reports believe that one of the reasons for the delay in the deal is that New Delhi wants assurances of no new tariffs from Washington.
