Bizarre attacks on media made few laugh

Bizarre attacks on media made few laugh

Even by the standards we’ve all become accustomed to, President Donald Trump’s performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Friday night was bizarre. And the fact of this – from the style of his hesitant speech to the substance of his vindictive message to a group of journalists who handed him a microphone – made it clear that he was now in something of a spiral. A public figure who, more than any politician or celebrity in our history, has placed the desire for approval at the center of his brand is facing his waning popularity. (His approval rating was one of the topics Trump addressed in a speech that sounded less like what he calls “weaving” and more like a rant.) He doesn’t like it when his style falls out of favor, and he’s going to make sure, over the next two years or maybe even longer, that we know that’s not the case.

Trump’s speech Friday night served as a reprise of the planned speech he was supposed to give at the inaugural 2026 WHCD in April, which was spoiled by a gunman firing shots inside the Washington Hilton. He then promised to denounce the press; at a postponed and more somber party months later, he seemed unsure, at first, of how to act. “Let’s have a little fun,” he said. “What are we doing here? Is this supposed to be fun, am I supposed to be serious, am I supposed to be a comedian?” But old reflexes returned: Just before that, Trump had complained about the evening’s awards, which had gone to various journalists whose work (of course, given their profession covering the current administration) was contrary to his interests. “It hasn’t been an easy night, all these accolades,” he said. “Do I have a say?” He later criticized journalists by name, including Kaitlan Collins of CNN and Josh Dawsey of the Wall Street Journal.

It’s an article of faith among the online #Resistance that Trump never won an Emmy because “The Apprentice” is a crucial part of his origin story; Just because an idea has been dulled by repetition doesn’t mean it’s wrong. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an evening of entertainment programs and an awards ceremony. This last thing seems to activate something primal in Trump; the former offers him the opportunity to redefine reality on his own terms and force an increasingly bored and silent audience to embark on the journey. (Indeed, during his speech, Trump recalled the 2011 Correspondents’ Dinner, at which then-President Barack Obama brutally roasted him, as a fun evening that he enjoyed, partly because it felt good to be the center of attention. That’s not how the event is remembered!)

There was an air of sweatiness about the evening: Like any inept host, Trump began blaming anonymous joke-writers for the source material — light, sub-Friars Club material lovingly roasting his allies Nicki Minaj and Bari Weiss — falling flat, but his own performance seemed oddly nervous. In the past, Trump has dominated journalists. Indeed, he told the world that this was what he planned to do during the first version of this event in April. Instead, however, Trump seemed offended and almost frightened by the crowd in front of him when discussing his own popularity, and waned as he moved through tired topics: the decline of Oscar audiences over time, for example, or his antipathy toward Chris Christie, Bruce Springsteen and Jane Fonda.

Trump’s anger at the Oscars used to have some charge. This isn’t because he claims the show’s ratings are down because of celebrities’ liberal nature (there’s much more to it than that), but because, as the apparent vanguard of a seismic cultural shift, Trump had the power to encompass virtually any entity. But now it is unfortunately predictable. This man has been the determining factor in American politics for ten years. We know he cares a lot about rewards! We don’t need to be told this again!

That, more than the chagrin that the US president was lashing out at reporters or the slight bewilderment that he couldn’t crack a borscht belt joke about an aging senator unable to consummate his marriage any longer, feels like the conclusion to a vexed and pointless hour of speech. The strange and sometimes unknowable mind that until recently gave us turns of phrase like “the late, great Hannibal Lecter” is now hooked on a public that, in the face of inflation and an unpopular war in Iran, is no longer laughing. And that spirit’s response is to return to safe and comfortable territory, restarting old battles with Rosie O’Donnell and with various awards bodies. The series has lost even the sinister appeal it might have had for Trump’s morbidly curious critics. And yet it will go on and on. Trump vowed, jokingly but not, to run for office (which the Constitution forbids) in 2028. And yet, listening to his deflated speech, you could tell his heart wasn’t in it. Maybe he was thinking about who won the prizes earlier in the evening.
