Fetterman votes again to stop US Senate war powers resolution

U.S. Sen. John Fetterman has split with Democrats by blocking a war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump’s ability to attack Iran.

The Trump administration has suspended U.S. strikes in Iran after nearly two weeks of military attacks in the Middle Eastern country.

The halt in strikes came days after President Donald Trump defended the war in Iran, following the deaths of four American soldiers killed in the conflict last weekend. “We want to get this over with, and we want to do it right, but we have to … do what we came to do,” Trump said. No strike has taken place since July 23.

Iranian and U.S. officials agreed to a ceasefire in June, but it quickly dissolved and Iran continued to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has pledged to take control of the strait, a global waterway vital to global oil supplies.

More than two-thirds of Americans surveyed in a Washington Post/Ipsos poll released earlier this month said they disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran war. The House of Representatives voted July 23 to call on the president to end the war by a vote of 214 to 208, with four Republicans siding with Democrats in reprimanding Trump. Senate Republicans later rejected a similar symbolic measure — and an opportunity to oppose the president.

UN ambassador doesn’t say if pause will continue

Michael Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on July 26, declined to say whether the pause in strikes would continue while Iranian and U.S. officials negotiate.

“What the president is doing right now, as we’ve seen from the beginning, is giving some space to some discussions,” Waltz said. “The talks are ongoing. They are happening at all levels, from the most technical to the highest levels, of course, both within the Iranian government and the American government.”

Host Kristen Welker asked Waltz if the war would be over by the new year, despite Trump saying months ago that the conflict would end quickly. Waltz pointed to decades of Iranian aggression against the United States — and said he wouldn’t “put some kind of timetable” when asked again about ending the war.

CNN and New York Times: Iran and Oman discuss the Strait of Hormuz

CNN and The New York Times reported on July 26 that Esmaeil Baghaei, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said that officials from Iran and Omani, a neighboring Middle Eastern country, had held discussions over the Strait of Hormuz.

Baghaei called the talks productive and said officials had made progress on the key waterway, but he did not immediately provide details.

About 20 percent of the world’s oil and natural gas passes through the strait, and Iran has repeatedly used it as leverage during the war. The United States resumed the naval blockade of Iranian ports earlier this month, eliminating another of the elements agreed to in the preliminary peace plan concluded in June.
