ONE MONTH TO GO UNTIL GSSE 2023
The Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) is a biennial multi-sport event launched by the Republic of San Marino in 1985, featuring nine European small states. The GSSE offers an exceptional opportunity for the smallest European countries to act and compete at a viable level.
The GSSE was last held in Montenegro in 2019 and due to the latest pandemic, this year marks the official return of the games, hosted by Malta. The very first time Malta hosted this event was in 1993. Since then, they assumed the organizing position in 2003. Twenty years later, the small rock is once again ready to welcome their small co-islands namely Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein , Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro and San Marino. The event will take place from May 28 to June 4.
The GSSE will carry delegations of over 1,000 athletes, coaches, officials and VIPs. Various events will be held in 10 different sports, including athletics, basketball, judo, rugby sevens, sailing, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis and tennis.Puka, the official mascot, is a derivative of lampuka, the Maltese name for dorado fish . The mascot’s vision has been developed by bringing together elements of Maltese culture, such as friendly nature and vibrancy.
The judo event takes place at the National School of Sport in Pembroke. This establishment is precisely Malta’s first school dedicated to sports excellence. The venue was established in September 2012 and is a recognized National Center of Excellence. In judo, the host nation, Montenegro, won the overall individual medal table at the last GSSE while also excelling in the men’s team. Victory of the women’s team event was claimed by Monaco in 2019. In a month the individual event will take place on the 30e May while the mixed team event is shown on the 1st July.
