Eagles secure spot in ASUN quarterfinals with 5-0 win over Jacksonville
The third-seeded Florida Gulf Coast University beach volleyball team posted a flawless 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded Jacksonville University on Wednesday in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.
The Eagles will now face No. 2 Stetson in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 11 a.m. Kaitlyn Luebbers moved up to third in the FGCU record book, earning her 70e career victory.
“There is always a different level of intensity during the conference tournament and our girls rose to the challenge today,” said FGCU head beach volleyball coach.Chris Sweat. “Jacksonville is a well-coached and much-improved team over the years that played one of the toughest games there is, and they made us work for every point.
“We know it will only get harder from here, but these rivalries and competitive matches are what collegiate beach volleyball is all about.”
FGCU took control early against the Dolphins, as Syklar English and Sydney Majick earned a 21-14, 21-14 victory over No. 5.
Jaci Timmerman And Mia Thompson added another point for Green & Blue with a 21-12, 21-17 at number 4.
FGCU's No. 3 pair of Nicole De Oliveria and Luebbers won the match with a 21-19, 21-12 win.
Couple of the year Shelby BeisnerAndTrinity Rosalesdelivered a 22-20, 21-19 win over No. 1 to push the Green & Blue lead to 4-0.
Kacie Johnson And Emma Soncrant rallied through three sets to win 21-16, 17-21, 15-9 to help the Eagles advance to the next round.
