College Football Rankings: Sports Illustrated names five teams that could be No. 1 in the Preseason AP Poll
College football isn’t far away and neither is the AP poll preseason rankings! Sports illustrated has put together five teams that will do everything they can to become the number 1 team when the time comes.
So we had the honor of splitting up those selected teams. Where will they end up in preseason? That’s anyone’s guess at this point.
Still, it’s never too early to take a look at the top of the AP Poll. Here are five teams, for YESthat could be number 1.
Georgia could lay claim to the No. 1 ranking in the AP Poll when it comes to 2026. Despite losing talented players like WR Zachariah Branch, LB CJ Allen, CB Daylen Everette and DT Christen Miller, they brought in quite a few transfer portal players.
The big one could be CB Gentry Williams, who is from Oklahoma. Let us not forget, Gunner Stockton is back at quarterback and of course, Kirby Smart is still the head coach!
Ohio State will have a great case to be the top team in the AP Poll when the preseason rankings are released. The Buckeyes fell short last season compared to Indiana and Miami, the two teams that played for the national title.
But with what they bring back, like QB Julian SayinW Jeremiah Smith and R.B BoJacksonthis team is still loaded. They need to replace an elite defense, but portal additions like it What Russaw, James Smith, Terry Moore And Earl Little Jr.they will be in good shape.
Oregon decided to run it back for 2026 and they could very well be #1 in the AP Poll! QB Dante Moore opted to return to the program and postpone the NFL. Additionally, the Ducks added depth with a two-year Nebraska starter Dylan Raiola.
Dan Lanning has improved this team every season, and the Ducks would certainly add some key portal players. Koi Perich (Minnesota) and Carl Williams IV (Baylor) will help with safety. Let’s not forget WR Evan Stewart will also return from injury.
It hurts to lose the No. 3 overall pick in Jeremiyah Love to the NFL and Jadarian Price! But fear not, Notre Dame is still bringing back QB C.J. Carr and brought in more than enough via the transfer portal.
RB Anejas Williams takes over and the defense should be great, led by CB Leonard Moore. Transfers are included Keon Keeley, Francis Brewu, DJ McKinney And Jayden Sandersamong others. Maybe Notre Dame won’t be #1 to start the year in the AP Poll, but they have a chance to get there!
Texas has a real shot at becoming the No. 1 team in the AP Poll when the time comes. Bow Manning is back at QB to lead this team back to the CFP and beyond.
CamColeman was arguably the best WR in the transfer portal and he comes from Auburn. They also brought in LB Rasheem Biles from Pitt to offset some defensive losses. Everything depends Steve Sarkisian and Manning, but early on Texas should definitely be considered a national title contender.
