Anti-gay stickers target world number 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner
A strange incident involving homophobia took place in Rome last week ahead of the Italian Open, involving the Italian men’s star and world number 1. Jannik Sinner.
Stickers targeting Sinner with gay slurs appeared around the Foro Italico stadium where the tournament is being held. Italian website gay.it reports. And no one has any idea who made the stickers or why, although bizarrely they may have something to do with a football match.
One sticker says ‘Sinner’ followed by the Italian word for fa**ot, and a second says ‘Sinner’ followed by Italian slang for bu*tf*cker. They were first noticed by Italian journalist Andrea Prandi, who wrote on X: “Sometimes I feel ashamed to live in this beautiful city…”
As for the ‘why’, no one really knows, but speculation revolves around the timing of the Italian Open final, which Sinner is expected to reach, and a huge football match between Italian Serie A rivals AS Roma and Lazio in Rome. Both are scheduled for Sunday, with the football match set to take place at the Stadio Olimpico, while the Italian Open final will be held at the same complex.
Football fans and the Lazio coach have complained about the timing and there is speculation that a disgruntled fan is directing his anger over the timing of the football match at Sinner for reasons that only the perpetrator could understand.

The real focus here should be on the fact that this is yet another example of homophobia in sports, whatever the reason. There are only two gay male professional players, Joao Lucas Reis Da Silva of Brazil and Mika Brunold of Switzerland, although many top players have expressed support for an away player in recent years. Brunod was eliminated in a qualifying match for the Italian Open.
