Cross-border tunnel discovered near Otay Mesa along US-Mexico border, HSI confirms – NBC 7 San Diego

A tunnel was discovered near the Tijuana-San Diego border in Otay Mesa as Mexican authorities carried out a search warrant in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood on Saturday, Mexico’s attorney general’s office said.

The tunnel is approximately 265 meters long and 6.30 meters deep, or approximately 869 feet long and 21 feet deep.

Authorities executed a search warrant at a property in Nueva Tijuana on Saturday with the help of the Mexican Navy. During their search, authorities seized, among other things, four cartridges, three cell phones, bank cards, a DVR device and 24 doses of methamphetamine, the Mexican Navy said.

During the search, real estate authorities discovered a wooden tunnel that likely headed toward the U.S. border.

Based on evidence seized during the search, Mexico’s attorney general’s office said the property likely served as a hub for the storage and trafficking of weapons, explosives and illicit substances.

The evidence and property have been handed over to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will continue the investigation in accordance with the law.
