Queensland Cricket Club provides a safe and inclusive place for women to play

When Kylie Starcevich’s daughter aged out of the local junior cricket league, the only option was to join a boys’ team.

“My daughter has autism and ADHD… her anxiety just meant she didn’t have the confidence to be the only girl playing among a group of boys,” Ms. Starcevich said.

So the Sunshine Coast woman decided to form her own team.

Five years later, the Nambour USC Strikers are on the verge of doing what many aspiring Australian cricketers could only dream of; take on the Poms.

“I can’t believe this is actually happening,” Ms. Starcevich said.

“It’s all come together and everyone has been so wonderful and supportive.”

More than just ‘taxi drivers’

The team, with players ranging from teenagers to women in their 50s, left for England on Wednesday morning to take part in the Walker Women’s Cricket Cup.

They will take on England’s Kempton Cricket Club in Surrey, in a series of T20 matches.

Ms Starcevich, tour manager and captain of the squad, said there were four mother-daughter duos in the mix, three of which were traveling for the competition.

“Us moms are usually just taxi drivers for our kids, but we have so much to offer and it’s just an all-inclusive team,” she said.

“We just go down there, have some fun and try to be as competitive as possible. But the most important thing about our team is that there is no judgment.“

Vice-captain and tour coordinator Sharyn Eva, a Navy veteran, said she was “incredibly proud” to represent the Sunshine Coast and Australia.

Ms Eva only returned to the sport later in life, while dealing with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from her time in the defense force.

“Cricket has given me back a sense of connection that I didn’t know I was missing,” Eva said.

“This team is more than just sports, it is a support network and a place where you can show up exactly as you are and be accepted.“

Big hitters are coming on board

Team captain Ms Starcevich said New Zealand cricket legend Nicola Browne joined the squad for their final training session.

“She came down Monday night, which was great to have that support,” the captain said.

“Her cricket knowledge is second to none.“

The tour is sponsored by Walker Corporation, the developers behind the Maroochydore City Centre, which will include a new Athlete’s Village and 6,500-seat arena ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Cricket will make its long-awaited return at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and will also be included in 2032.

“Our juniors can’t travel because they’re still at school, but we’re actually doing a training session for junior girls in Kempton to try to get them interested and show them there are opportunities in cricket so they don’t start to drop out – which is a big problem in Australia,” Ms Starcevich said.

“We have donated some equipment through our sponsors, Walker, and some equipment to Kempton and will try to make this a reciprocal thing which then provides a pathway for our juniors as they grow up.

“They will then get the opportunities that we have now created.

“I hope for the win, but most of all for the fun and the community having a great time together.”
