Odds for US men’s hockey to reach the quarterfinals of the world championships

Defending champion United States’ chances of reaching the quarter-finals of the Men’s Hockey World Cup became more difficult after a defeat to Latvia.

The Americans have fallen to sixth place and are no longer in control of their destiny as they attempt to finish in the top four of Group A and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

But an Austrian loss to Germany gave the US two possible paths forward. The rankings for Sunday’s matches are Austria (third, nine points), Germany (fourth, seven points), Latvia (fifth, six points) and the United States (sixth, five points).

The United States won’t play Hungary until Monday before wrapping up the preliminary round against Austria on Tuesday. But Latvia and Austria will take action on Sunday. Here’s how these games affect the Americans’ chances:

Latvia vs Great Britain

The game starts at 10:20 AM ET. Even if Latvia wins – and it should against last-place Britain – the United States would remain alive. They would be four points behind, but could gain another six points in the last two games. Likewise, a loss in Latvia would amount to nothing. The United States would still be one point behind with two games to go. The Latvians also face Hungary on Tuesday and if they take five points in their two matches, the United States will not be able to overtake them. Latvia has the tiebreaker because it defeated the Americans.

Austria vs Finland

The game starts at 2:20 PM ET. If Austria wins in regulation and gets three points, the United States cannot overtake it. Any other outcome would make Tuesday’s match between Austria and the US meaningful, assuming the Americans beat Hungary first on Monday.

What about Germany?

Germany faces Great Britain on Monday and can finish with a maximum of 10 points, allowing the US to catch up. The Americans hold the tiebreaker after beating the Germans.
