Construction of a pickleball court is progressing at Spindler Park in Highland – The Troy Times Tribune

New pickleball courts are taking shape in Spindler Park, and city officials aim to open the area by the end of June.

The project includes five pickleball courts, additional parking and lighting, making it the first of its kind in the city. The asphalt was laid about a month ago and must be completely cured before the final overlay can be applied. Fencing and posts have been added, enclosing the courts with a 3-metre high fence, while the individual courts are cordoned off with mesh.

The main contractor for the expected $281,000 project is Rooters Asphalt, which is subcontracting parts of the work to other companies, including SportMaster. The price tag increased during the project, partly due to rising material costs.

Despite some delays, the overall timeline remains on track.

Parks Director Brad Koehnmann expects the courts to see heavy use upon completion, noting that pickleball has already become popular at the nearby Weinheimer Community Center.

“It will be a huge deal. People have been waiting for it,” he said. “We postponed it for proper financing.”

Funding sources included Madison County park improvement grants; a Metro East Park and Recreation District (MEPRD) grant; donations from a partnership between the Highland Area Community Foundation, Highland High School Leo Club and Girl Scout Troop 342; and the parks and recreation budget.

According to USA Pickleball, the paddle sport combines tennis, badminton and table tennis and can be played indoors or outdoors on a badminton court with a slightly lower net. The sport is very accessible, attractive to players of all ages and can be played in singles or doubles.

Initially, courts are expected to operate on a first-come, first-served basis while officials finalize guidelines and signage. Suggested measures include wearing good pumps and no cycling on the tracks. The signage may include a QR code that links visitors to game rules and additional information.

Years ago the location was home to community tennis courts.

“We’re excited to get it done and I can’t wait to see the turnout,” Koehnmann said. “It’s like a child waiting for Christmas.”
