2026 Women’s T20 World Cup: Ireland selection a ‘great honour’ for Dalzell
Dalzell’s parents were the first people she told about her call.
It is her father Alan who she credits with first sparking her interest in the sport.
“Dad has always had a passion for cricket.
“He would have let my brother and I play in the back of the house as kids.
“I joined Bready Cricket Club when I was 11 and played boys’ cricket, and then I started playing men’s cricket when I was about 13.”
Cricket as a career didn’t even feel like a possibility for Dalzell, but that changed in 2019 when the first-ever part-time contracts for women were awarded by Cricket Ireland.
One of the first recipients was the now Irish World Cup captain, Gaby Lewis.
Dalzell said there was a lack of visibility of female role models in cricket growing up.
“I just played for fun and was very accepted in both the boys and men’s teams at Bready.
“I didn’t feel any different. But there was also so little attention paid to women’s cricket in the broadcast media at the time. I feel like that has changed a lot now.
“For example, the growth of girls’ cricket in the North West has been enormous and I think the improved coverage of the sport is helping to encourage the next generation of young female cricketers.
“If someone younger can see me and know that I followed the path locally, hopefully it helps them know that they can do it too.”
Dalzell also praised Kathryn Rough, chief executive of the North West Cricket Union, for her work in developing the sport for women and girls.
“Kathryn has made huge changes by introducing younger girls leagues, which are now thriving and growing every year.
“You can see the difference that it is being made for cricket in the North West and that it is coming through the women’s leagues, and the clubs are really seeing the benefits of it.”
