Mason McCarty of Gallatin wins No. 4; Hellgate, CMR prevails
KALISPELL — Gallatin’s Mason McCarty wrote a piece of tennis history in Montana, while Great Falls’ Georgia Pike denied Missoula Hellgate’s CMR Elliotte Banziger her own piece.
McCarty advanced to the Class AA boys singles title on Friday, becoming just the fifth man in state history to win four straight championships. He defeated Colton Manotvani of Kalispell Glacier 6-0, 6-0 in the final, dropping just three games in his four tournament victories.
Banziger was trying to complete the same championship run as McCarty. Banziger had won three girls’ singles championships, but her streak was ended by Pike, who won Friday’s final 6-4, 6-1.
Banziger had won her first two matches 6-0, 6-0 until Gallatin’s Darta Egle fought Banziger in the semifinals. Banziger won 7-5, 6-1, but Pike was too much in the final.
Now it’s Pike’s turn to try to become the fifth girl to win four singles titles. The freshman lost only one match en route to the final, where she took control after a tight first set and took a firm grip on the championship.
Emma Duncan and Weslley Banziger – Elliotte’s sister – claimed the girls’ doubles title for Hellgate with a rollercoaster 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Gallatin’s Alex Mansour and Raena Wilson. Weslley Banziger and Duncan dropped just one set on their way to the title.
The boys doubles title went to Harrison Rotar and Collin Gross of Bozeman in a straight-sets victory over Eli Crist and Howard Daniel of Great Falls CMR. Rotar and Gross won an extended tiebreak in the first set (11-9) before ruling the second set for a 7-6, 6-2 victory.
Hellgate’s title match performances helped the Knights capture their third girls team title in the past four years. The Knights scored 33 points, followed by Gallatin in second (26) and CMR in third (20).
In the boys team race, CMR claimed the title for the third year in a row and for the fourth time in five seasons going into 2022 when the Rustlers were tied with Bozeman. The Rustlers scored 26 points to second-place Gallatin’s 18 points. Bozeman and Helena Capital were in third place with 16 points each.
The consolation championships went to Egle in girls’ singles; Cadence Daniels and Cassidy Daniels of Kalispell Glacier in girls doubles; Hellgate’s Jack Currie-Welch and Andrew Duman in the boys’ doubles; and Helena Capital’s Cooper Laslovich, who rallied after losing the first set, in the boys’ singles.
