Victorian BBL license offered to private investor as Renegades and Stars were about to merge

Cricket Victoria plans to merge the Stars and Renegades into one “Melbourne” team and sell its second BBL license to a private investor.

The shake-up is dependent on the approval of Cricket Australia’s plans to allow a phased sale of shares in BBL clubs by state associations.

Cricket Victoria (CV) staff were informed of the move on Tuesday afternoon.

In a statement, CV confirmed that it would be preparing to receive expressions of interest with a view to selling one of its two licenses.

“We have a responsibility to ensure Victorian cricket remains strong now and into the future,” CV chairman Ross Hepburn said.

“This process gives us the opportunity to explore new investments that can strengthen the game at every level and ensure cricket continues to thrive in the state for generations to come.”

The new team will reportedly be called Melbourne and wear navy blue and play home games at the MCG, while the moniker “Bushrangers” was previously mooted.

That would be a return to the nickname Victoria previously used in state men’s competitions.

It remains unclear whether the Stars and Renegades will compete under their current brands in the 2026-2027 BBL season, although Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said in April it would be “business as usual” for the upcoming campaign.

Any sale of BBL licenses would also require approval from the Australian Cricketers Association, which is not expected to happen for some time.

CA’s privatization plan for the BBL stalled in late April when Queensland and NSW torpedoed the initial proposal.

South Australia was interested in a hybrid proposal, while Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia were keen to bring in private investors.

“Option A for us has always been… that we do it at the same time to get the maximum value out of the market,” Greenberg said at the time.

“But it’s clear we’re not at that point yet, so we now have to reassess what comes next.

“We just started analyzing what a different model might look like, and is there a model where some states use private capital and some states don’t?

“We would need to conduct in-depth analysis to understand the impact on Australian cricket.

“Because in order to do this, it has to benefit the entire sport, and we have to look at that lens in the decisions we make.”
