Former world number 1 Serena Williams has added the Berlin Tennis Open to her comeback schedule, which starts at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club.
The 44 year old returns to professional tennis in London next week, where she will play doubles with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club.
It has now been announced that Williams will also play doubles at the Berlin Tennis Open from June 15, with a partner yet to be confirmed.
“Every tournament I now add to my schedule feels special, and Berlin is no exception,” the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion said on the official Berlin Open website.
“I look forward to competing in front of the German fans and continuing to build momentum throughout the grass-court season.”
Williams was pictured on Thursday playing on the grass at Queen’s Club alongside 19-year-old Mboko.
The American has not played a match since a stunning farewell at the 2022 US Open, with Williams saying at the time that she was “moving away” from tennis.
Speculation has been mounting about Williams’ comeback since she re-entered the anti-doping program last year – a requirement for playing on tour.
Singles back at Wimbledon?
And former world number 1 Lindsay Davenport revealed Williams’ return might have happened sooner if she hadn’t had to complete six months in the program first.
“I had heard at the U.S. Open last year that she wanted to play mixed (doubles),” Davenport said. “She couldn’t because of the drug testing protocol.”
Williams appears to have timed her comeback with Wimbledon in mind, with the first set of singles and doubles wildcards set to be announced at the tournament in Berlin.
Whether the veteran will watch singles at the All England Club remains a source of great intrigue, but Davenport would be surprised if that isn’t her ultimate goal.

She said of Williams’ return: “I think it’s great. So many stories in our sport are sometimes negative. And I think it’s great that there is excitement about a player’s return.
“It will be great to see her there again. When I saw her leave the field in New York, I really thought it was goodbye. With some players you think, ‘oh, they might come back’, but I never thought that would be the case.
‘You have to think she will slowly work her way back into singles. Then suddenly it’s time for the Grand Slam race again. So I’m for it.’

Williams remains one behind all-time record holder Margaret Court for Grand Slam singles titles and has not lifted a major trophy since the birth of her first daughter in 2017.
“It won’t be easy,” Davenport added. “If anyone could do it, it could certainly be her. She looks incredibly good, and in better shape than arguably when she left the sport.
“Her mentality has always been not to settle for mediocrity. So I think we have to assume that she will come back because she feels like she is in a position where she can actually make an immediate impact in women’s tennis.”
Meanwhile, British players Katie Boulter, Fran Jones, Harriet Dart and Mika Stojsavljevic have all been given wildcards for the singles at Queen’s, along with Emma Raducanu.
