Google Duo now works on Android tablets via email address

Android users no longer need a phone number to make Google Duo video calls on tablets. This is based on generalized reports following an update that is being deployed to eliminate the requirement. Before that, Android tablets and other non-phone devices needed a registered phone number to end calls.

Now, this update doesn’t seem to apply to smartphones. This means that users will still need to provide the phone number to use the app. But that applies to Chromebooks and other Chrome OS gadgets such as the all-new Lenovo Chromebook Duet.

This means that users outside the ecosystem of Android mobile phones or those without a SIM-enabled tablet or computer can also make video calls. And, as with the mobile platform, up to 12 participants can participate. However, there is a requirement for telephone calls made without a telephone number. Google Duo always requires a Google Account, as numberless calls are made through Gmail.

There may also be other areas in which Google Duo will operate without a phone number, apart from Android tablets, after this update. This would apply specifically to Google Home and Nest Home hub devices. But it is not immediately clear if this is the case. Either way, the decision to eliminate the requirement should still help cement the app as one of the best mobile video calling apps.

Indeed, Duo was already making significant progress on the shoulders of several other recent updates. For example, the company recently pushed the application to Web format for use in any browser.

But that stacks up a number of other improvements driven by AI and the need to help more users get connected at the same time. To start, Google Duo supports up to 12 participants at the end of March. And the app also now includes a feature that uses AI to reduce and even mask technical audio issues during a video call.

The last of these features was introduced in early April and uses a solution called WaveNetEQ. It was, unsurprisingly, developed by a Google team that has already been noted for creating much more complex solutions. Namely, it is a team of DeepMind, which has also been at the origin of research on the detection by AI of certain cancers and other diseases.

As with many Google applications, the update should be deployed fairly quickly. So, users who already have an Android tablet with Duo installed will want to make sure they have updated their Duo app to the latest version – or install it if they haven’t already. Presumably, this will be a server-side update, but it is always useful to install the latest version.

Once the update has arrived, a notification will be displayed at the bottom of the user interface on the home page of the application. This informs users that their email addresses can now be used by others to contact them for Duo video calls. From there, just make a phone call or let your friends and family know it’s a viable method of contact.
