Google to stop updating first-generation Chromecast in 2013

Google has quietly announced that Chromecast (1st gen) is no longer supported and will no longer be updated.

This means that Google’s original Nexus Q keyed streaming device will no longer receive software and security updates. Nearly 10 years of support isn’t bad in a big consumer electronics deal, especially for a $35 price tag. Google warns that end users “may notice a decrease in performance.”

The last firmware version for the 2013 Chromecast was 1.36.159268, released in November 2022 with “bug fixes and improvements.” That in itself was his first renewal in over three years.

On the Chromecast firmware version and release notes support page (last updated April 27, 2023), Google states:

Support for Chromecast (1st Gen) has ended. This means that these devices will no longer receive software and security updates, and Google will no longer provide technical support for them. Users may notice slow performance.

The first generation Chromecast looked like a lock with an HDMI port on the far right and a micro USB port for power on the other, and came with an adapter. “Chrome” and the browser logo were printed at the top. Its affordability comes from its extremely high specs of 512MB of RAM and his 2GB of storage.
