Mark Lemley and Matt Wansley write in the New York Times about “How Big Tech Companies are Killing Innovation.”
“Silicon Valley prides itself on disruption. Startups develop new technologies that upend existing markets and surpass incumbents. This cycle of creative destruction is what gave us the personal computer, the internet, and the smartphone.”
“But in recent years, a few incumbent technology companies have maintained their dominance. Why? We think they have learned how to embrace potentially disruptive newcomers before they become a competitive threat.”
The authors then cite examples of large, “incumbent” technology companies that have maintained control through acquisition or some form of merger, and are then controlled and managed by the “incumbents.”
The authors argue that this is “killing innovation.”
I would like to disagree with the conclusions drawn by these authors.
I've written about this topic before because I think it's crucial to the development of the field and the future innovations that will come from this combination.
It seems to me that one of the main drivers in this space is the need to scale, which startups cannot achieve in a timely manner.
To compete adequately in the AI space, companies need scale.
AI is a database, and the most effective systems rely on large database systems.
“Small” startups delivering breakthrough innovations simply cannot achieve the database scale required to really compete in this space.
This means that new companies lack the scale and management capabilities to build the data infrastructure needed in a timely manner to be fully competitive in this space.
To support this story, I used a fantastic book written by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, a professor of computer science at Stanford University called “The World as I See it: Curiosity, Exploration, and Discovery at the Dawn of AI.”
Dr. Li has been dubbed the Godmother of AI for the role she has played in the field.
What strikes me again and again in Dr. Lee's book is how the scale of AI ideas always grows exponentially as more and more data is required for any single application.
The amount of resources that would have to be committed to achieve the scale required is staggering.
And the speed at which it achieves this enormity is astounding.
One thing about technological advances that Lemley and Wansley seem to miss in their article is how quickly “technology” changes hands – a “new” generation of technology is replaced roughly every three years.
Growing startups don't have the capacity to continually innovate like larger, more experienced companies.
Returning again to Dr. Li’s book, she gives example after example of how large corporations are organized to continually scale their “innovation.”
Growing startups lack the focus to continue to “innovate.”
For me, the driving force behind the field of AI is the speed at which it is advancing.
Lemley and Wansley seem oblivious to how quickly the field of AI is changing.
Their argument that acquisitions are destroying competition for small startups doesn't sit well with me.
What keeps competitors on the cutting edge is the speed at which innovations move the field forward. The term “time pacing” seems to capture where competitors are at.
If large companies want to stay competitive, they need to keep up with what's going on. And the managers of large companies can't afford to neglect “keeping up” or they'll get left behind. They have to “take their time” on innovation.
A leading editorial in the Financial Times on Thursday described “Apple's late entry into the AI race.”
Wow!
Is Apple a “latecomer”?
However, the Financial Times reports that the company's entry could mark a “long-awaited turning point” in the AI race.
continue,
“The tech giant has a large share of the smartphone market, loyal buyers and a strong cross-device network, making it a natural candidate to become the consumer leader.”
“Its strengths may be enough to usher in an era of AI transformation after the current AI boom.”
The comments do not seem to include concerns that Apple is stifling competition and slowing innovation.
In fact, I believe this kind of competition is one of the main drivers of modern innovation.
You can't stop innovation… or even slow down the pace of innovation.
And in my view, the pace of time will continue to drive future innovation.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
