CarWow’s Mat Watson is a very petrol head and loves car reviews, drag racing and hands-on testing. JDM fans will love his latest drag racing. He is also competing two generations of Toyota Supra with each other in both drivetrains of the current model with the Supra Mk4, even in Japanese classic drag racing.

Modern Supra takes on the classic JDM machine

In-line engines, turbochargers and rear-wheel drive are everywhere. Matt is driving a 2.0L in-line 4 Supra with a 258 horsepower BMW source. In the current 3.0-liter Supra, in-line 6-cylinders from BMW bins produce 340 horsepower. It’s heavier than 2.0 liters, but it can still beat it. The question is where the Mk4 fits. The famous basket handle model is powered by Toyota’s 320-horsepower 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder 2JZ engine. It looks like a modern model would have seen before fighting a defeat with multiple shopping carts full of cans. This could be one of Kawau’s best drag races.

Matt decided to take his Supra off the line and just break boost, and don’t worry about the nasty BMW launch control you never want to engage in. So what happened in Race 1? Well Matt successfully took it off the line without launch control, but the 3.0 liter driver tried launch control, it didn’t work, and he just got stuck. Cumat yells again about launch control, but he has some useful points! The Mk4 Supra was sluggish, but off the line.

Race 2 saw similar results on YouTube

So what about Race 2? Both modern Supras were off the line, and a new 3.0 liters involved him to win while Mat was ahead. On a dry truck (it was a damp day), it could have been much closer, as the classic Supra had closed them. In the third race, Matt tried Supra in normal mode and started. But 3.0 liters won again.
