Windows 10 update returns pop-up alerts that everyone hates most

Microsoft has pushed an update that appears to have triggered the return of the infamous Windows 10 pop-up alert.

Recently, Windows 10 users have begun receiving two new alerts promoting Microsoft Bing, the company’s search engine. Microsoft recommends different browser settings. Want to change them? A pop-up will appear.

Bing alerts are believed to have been reintroduced as part of an update to the Microsoft Edge web browser that recently migrated to version 91 and are provided by default to Windows 10 users who do not search through Bing.

Microsoft has long struggled to build a foothold in the search market with Bing, which has always played Google’s second (and in some cases third) fiddle.

According to the latest Statcounter data, only 2.29% of search queries are made via Bing worldwide, while market leaders account for 92.26%.

Today, Windows 10 is installed on more than a billion devices around the world, and Microsoft aims to leverage its large operating system installation base to boost Bing’s rankings.

The new Bing pop-up allegedly facilitates a number of different attributes and features. The first focuses on news feeds and security features, and the second claims that integration with the Microsoft Rewards program can save users money by using Bing.

Alerts allow users to choose to temporarily close pop-ups or switch to Bing, but they don’t provide an easy way to disable future pop-ups of this kind.
