Nationwide earthquake drills to be held in Costa Rica at night

If you live in an earthquake-prone area, it is important to know what to do when earthquakes strike.

Costa Rica is one of those places.

According to the National Emergency Committee (CNE), the average number of earthquakes in Costa Rica is 350 per month, or about 12 each day. You’d be hard pressed to notice the vast majority of them – you might not feel it at all, or you might mistake it for a truck rushing down the street.

But every now and then, an earthquake causes massive damage in Costa Rica. (Want a reminder? Here’s a list!)

The United States Department of Homeland Security recommends the following when an earthquake strikes:

If you are in a vehicle, stop and stop. Set the parking brake. If you are in bed, turn your face down and cover your head and neck with a pillow. If you are outside, stay away from buildings. Do not enter the entrance. Don’t run outside.

CNE is hosting a nationwide earthquake simulation, or exercise, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 11 to help Costa Rica prepare for evacuations in the event of a major earthquake. The organization expects thousands of people across the country to participate in the event.

This will be the third seismic drill of this scale in Costa Rica, and the first such event of the night.
