‘Corrupt and incompetent’: NYC Election Commission denounces mistake not made in force

CNN’s John Avlon, Athena Jones and Harry Enten have ripped off the New York Election Commission after throwing New York’s mayor into chaos by counting test votes. On Tuesday, the City Electoral Commission released new numbers that Brooklyn President Eric Adams had reduced to a leader in the Democratic primary in the first set of qualified election results. Former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, in that first count, almost closed the gap, giving Adams a two-point lead. A few hours after the new figures were networked, the committee stepped back – following questions from the Adams campaign and others – and acknowledged the “disagreement” in the counting process. He then removed the data from his website. On Tuesday night, the body released another statement, this time revealing the 135,000 test vote records in the initial amount. The count will run again after the clipboard is cleared. “Board staff have removed all test ballot images from the system and will upload election night results to verify references to election night reporting software,” the BOE said on its Twitter account. “The record of the votes cast will be re-created and the RCV rounds will be re-tabulated.” The confusion was compounded by several concerns in New York City about the ability of management to manage the selection system that is being rolled out across the city. The BOE has a corrupt reputation in the city and is seen as a hub for political patronage jobs. Tuesday’s count, in itself, was a dry race before the final count, which means it won’t be done for weeks, as absent votes are crossed and, in some cases, voters respond to warnings about minor mistakes.
