An initial 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Big Island Trudy. No tsunami is expected.

An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 5.2 struck off the coast of Hamakua on the Big Island this afternoon. However, a tsunami is not expected.

The quake struck 7.8 miles northwest of Kukuihaili on the Big Island at 1:43 p.m. at a depth of 16.7 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.

Although a tsunami was not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said that some areas may have been shaken.

The Hawaii Volcano Observatory said residents reported strong shaking across the Kohala areas. About 1,100 reports were submitted on “Did you feel it?” A web page for respondents from as far away as Kauai.

“This earthquake is related to the stress caused by the weight of the island on the ocean’s core crust and mantle,” Ken Hoon said in a statement. However, he also noted that “these earthquakes are relatively common and are not directly related to volcanic processes.”

The previous strongest earthquake was the 4.2-magnitude earthquake on October 30, 2010, which was located 4 miles east of Coqueheli at a depth of 21 miles, according to HVO.
