American arrested in murder of Haitian president working alongside actor Sean Penn after 2010 earthquake – NECN

An American arrested in connection with the assassination of a Haitian president along with Sean Penn worked to rebuild the country from a devastating earthquake in 2010, according to three people familiar with the Hollywood actor’s decade-old relief campaign.

The two people said James Solags worked as a driver and security for the Haitian relief organization J/P, which Benn started following the 7.0-magnitude earthquake in 2010 that killed more than 300,000 people in the impoverished Caribbean nation.

One person said Solages left the organization, now known as CORE, sometime in 2011. The three people requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Ben laid down what he considers life-long roots in Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake, even living in a tent among some 40,000 Haitians made homeless by the natural disaster.

For his multi-year efforts on behalf of the Haitian people, former President Michel Martelly – mentor of slain President Jovenel Moise – has appointed Ambassador Ben Pan-Am, the first non-Haitian to receive this designation.

Solajis is one of two Haitian Americans arrested as part of the investigation into Moise’s murder. The 35-year-old studied in South Florida and in 2019 set up a charity to help residents of his hometown of Jacmel, along the southern coast of Haiti. He worked as a bodyguard at Canada’s embassy in Haiti, but a relative says he never received any military training.
