Experts monitor increased seismic activity in Thiva

The National Observatory’s head of research said the National Observatory’s Geodynamic Institute is closely monitoring increased seismic activity in Thiva – where more than 160 tremors have been recorded since Saturday afternoon – but sees no reason for undue concern.

Responding to the concerns of Viotia residents, Athanasios Janas said the earthquakes – which ranged in magnitude from 1 to 4.3 on the Richter scale – likely heralded a larger event.

He said the situation was “unfolding smoothly” but “it’s not certain how it will develop, so we need to monitor it for the next 48 hours.”

Referring to the rumbling residents who heard during these incidents, Ganas said this was due to their shallowness.

“There is a fault below the city of Thiva that has been activated and can cause a large earthquake of up to 6 Richter … The reason for the noise is that the foci of the earthquake are located just under the feet of the inhabitants – they are very shallow, at a depth of 3-6 km”, Explaining, adding that city structures are built according to codes and are not considered to be in danger of collapsing in the event of a larger event.

Efthymios Likas, a geologist and head of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, also sought to play down residents’ concerns in comments on Sky TV on Monday.

“These are small faults that are activated, which cannot lead to a larger earthquake or activation of a larger fault,” he said.

“To really start worrying, we need to use strengths above 6-7 Richter, which is highly unlikely,” he added.

Thebes is located about 50 kilometers northwest of Athens.
