Updated tsunami maps remind the public that they may be in a very risky area

Santa Barbara, CA – You don’t have to be right on the beach to worry about the “what ifs” that come with a tsunami.

An earthquake that sets off a series of waves that can submerge coastal properties is very possible and the new maps help the public know where their dangers are.

Obviously, you don’t have to live in a tsunami zone to be in danger.

For example, the Santa Barbara Waterfront has millions of visitors each year in areas that would be flooded if a major tsunami occurred on the beach.

It can happen with an earthquake in the Santa Barbara Canal and comes with a bit of a warning. Or, it can happen thousands of miles away and come with the expected time and wave size.

Experts have updated their maps to show which areas will be hit first and hardest hit.

In Santa Barbara County, it includes parts of Carpinteria in and around the Salt Marsh District, the Santa Barbara waterfront including the Funk Zone, Goleta Beach Park and parts of the airport and Ocean Beach in Lompoc.

Expert advice tells the public to stay away from the beach if they feel a major earthquake, especially if it is determined to be outside.

The Santa Barbara Channel has many fault lines and some of them are capable of producing large earthquakes that can trigger a tsunami.
