The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says the famous Beloruss Bridge in Marlboro “was refurbished” a little over a decade ago, making it so strong that it can now withstand a “one in 1,000 years” earthquake.

The bridge, located on State Highway 6, connects Marlboro to Nelson and has been a subject of concern to the Automobile Association (AA).

NZTA System Director Andrew James said the bridge was fit for purpose after modernizing in 2009 after conducting a national survey.

The struts that join the bridge leading to the road, land, and walls were upgraded in 2009 to ensure that the bridge achieved a high level of seismic resilience to counteract a single seismic event in 1,000 years (the possibility of an annual overflow).

The Beloruss Bridge is located on State State Highway 6, which connects Marlboro to Nelson.

“About 20 years ago, NZTA conducted a national seismic examination of all bridges, to verify strength and resilience in an earthquake scenario.

As a result of this survey, a program to adjust and adjust some bridges was implemented. This program has been largely completed.

“The Beloruss Bridge was one of the bridges included in the earthquake upgrade program,” James said.

AA declined to comment over the weekend, but last week, AA Marlborough Robyn Gardener, the president of Belarus, said the Belarus Bridge was “weak” and needed “urgent” repair.

“The current bridge is vulnerable to earthquakes, and one bad event will cut the lifeline between Nelson and Blenheim and completely isolate the area around Baylor Sound and the Ray Valley,” Gardner said.
