Aleema challenges Imran Khan’s solitary confinement
Aleema Khan challenged Imran Khan’s alleged solitary confinement before the IHC, saying it was illegal and inhumane. The petition also raises concerns about his eyesight and seeks an end to the reported isolation.
ISLAMABAD: Aleema Khan has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against what she described as the illegal and inhumane isolation of her brother, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, according to a petition that surfaced on Saturday.
The petition was filed through advocate Salman Safdar and names the Superintendent of Adiala Prison, Inspector General of Prisons, Chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Director General of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) as respondents.
According to the petition, a meeting between lawyers and Imran Khan on April 8 revealed that the former prime minister was allegedly kept in solitary confinement for 22 hours a day. It further said that his wife Bushra Bibi was allegedly kept in complete isolation 24 hours a day. The plea also said that no member of Imran Khan’s family or the PTI leader was allowed to meet him for the last six months.
The petition claimed that no court order had authorized solitary confinement as part of Imran Khan’s sentence and argued that his continued confinement was therefore unlawful. He asked the court to declare the so-called solitary confinement illegal and to order the authorities to end the practice.
Health concerns raised in petition
Aleema Khan also told the court that her brother was being subjected to inhumane treatment and had informed her legal team that his eyesight had deteriorated significantly. The petition claimed that about 85 percent of his vision had been affected.
Imran Khan’s eye condition, identified as right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), was revealed in late January. Under government-organized treatment, his first medical procedure took place on January 24, while the fifth took place on June 15.
A medical report prepared by doctors who examined him on February 15 indicates that, unaided, his right eye had partial vision of 6/24 while his left eye had vision of 6/9. With glasses, his vision improved to partial 6/9 in the right eye and 6/6 in the left.
Related cases and upcoming hearings
The petition emphasizes that solitary confinement is among the most severe sanctions and cannot be imposed without legal authorization. This also comes soon after Bushra Bibi’s daughter Mubashra Khawar Maneka filed a separate complaint with the IHC regarding her mother’s alleged isolation.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 5, 2023, after being convicted in the Toshakhana case for concealing details of gifts. He is currently serving a 14-year sentence at Adiala Prison in Rawalpindi in the £190 million case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case. On January 17, 2025, an accountability court in Islamabad sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 14 years and seven years in prison respectively in this case.
Both subsequently challenged their convictions before the IHC, which set their appeal hearing for Monday. The case pertains to allegations that the couple received billions of rupees and land measuring hundreds of kanals from Bahria Town Ltd in return for legalization of 50 billion rupees which had been identified and repatriated by the UK during the PTI government.
In recent months, the government and opposition have exchanged accusations over Imran Khan’s medical care. The opposition accused the government of lacking transparency over his treatment and not allowing access to his personal doctors, while the government rejected the allegations. The PTI and Imran Khan’s family have demanded that he be allowed to be treated by his own doctors and at a hospital of his choice, citing concerns over limited knowledge about his medical care.
