A new earthquake was detected off the northern coast of Venezuela, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale.

Friday’s earthquake comes days after two powerful earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday evening, killing at least 920 people and destroying parts of the capital, Caracas.

The latest quake occurred 61 kilometers (36 miles) northwest of Maracay in northern Venezuela, earthquake tracking organization EMSC said in a social media post.

Additional details are not yet known, but Reuters reported that residents of Maracay and Caracas felt the tremors resulting from Friday’s earthquake, citing local witnesses.

The South American country is still suffering from the effects of the two earthquakes that occurred on Wednesday, one measuring 7.2 and the other measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale.

The death toll is expected to rise, with the US Geological Survey estimating that the number of victims may exceed 10,000.

At least 3,360 people were reported injured, and more than 172 people remain trapped under the rubble. The number of missing people exceeded 50,000 people, according to the Venezuelan government.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced on Friday that access to some of the areas most affected by the earthquake in La Guaira state would be restricted.

Residents organize the collection of supplies and search for survivors. Some even used their cars as improvised ambulances.

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government has eased restrictions on social media platforms such as X, which were blocked in the wake of the disputed 2024 presidential election.

This in turn allowed community members to share information about their missing loved ones.
