Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, in Seychelles during a state visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his three-day state visit to Seychelles on Saturday with a visit to the National Botanical Gardens in Victoria, where he joined Seychelles President Patrick Herminie to visit the sanctuary, feed the giant tortoises and strengthen the close ties between the two countries.
Soon after his arrival in the island nation, Prime Minister Modi visited the Seychelles National Botanical Garden alongside President Patrick Herminie.
During the tour, the Prime Minister was seen feeding several giant tortoises, including Jonathan, the famous 194-year-old tortoise recognized as the world’s oldest living land animal.
The two leaders also planted a commemorative sapling in the botanical garden and interacted with the staff of the conservatory, who briefed them about the distinctive flora and fauna of the sanctuary.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Seychelles on Saturday afternoon for a three-day visit during which he will be the guest of honor at the country’s National Day celebrations, commemorating 50 years of independence from the United Kingdom in 1976.
In a special diplomatic gesture, President Herminie personally received the Prime Minister at the airport along with senior ministers and government representatives.
The arrival ceremony included cultural performances, including a traditional dance from the Kutch region of Gujarat. Highlighting the cultural bond between the two countries, Modi wrote on X: “An incredible cultural bond! The welcome at the Seychelles airport included a Kutch dance.
