A local man raises money for earthquake-affected family in Haiti

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook Haiti on Saturday, leaving a path of death and destruction behind.

“They’ve lost their homes and we’ve lost a family member and it’s devastating,” said Manel Charles.

Charles has lived in New Orleans for nearly 20 years, but is originally from Haiti. Charles says two of his cousins ​​were killed in the earthquake, and many of his family members are now homeless.

“You know how Katrina was when it happened, how hard it was for you to have the resources, it was hard for the American people? Imagine they don’t have the resources there,” Charles said.

So Charles and other Haitians in the New Orleans area are trying to help their families who need it most.

“When I saw the videos they sent me, I cried because I knew it was bad before, now it’s even more difficult,” said Myrtle Velesno, who is also trying to help his family in Haiti.

Haiti is still recovering from the 2010 earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people.

Now, the country will have to rebuild again, and Charles is doing his best to raise money to help.

When your homeland collapses and you can do nothing, it hurts very badly. That’s why all I have here, I don’t take for granted, because my people at home don’t have anything,” said Charles.
