Earthquakes continue to shake the Skagit County Valley

Seismologists at the University of Washington say 16 earthquakes have been reported north of Mount Josephine so far, and more may come.

Skagit County, Washington – The remote Skagit County valley has experienced 17 earthquakes in just over a week, although there are no known active fault lines in the area.

Another earthquake hit Friday evening, registering 2.4 on the Richter scale.

Now, seismologists are wondering why, and how many earthquakes are coming.

The earthquakes struck near Mount Josephine, about six miles north of Hamilton. The University of Washington (UW) Pacific Northwest Seismic Network has received more than 30 reports of mild shaking as far as Mount Vernon.

It was the largest earthquake yet with a magnitude of 2.8, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). However, most were within the magnitude 2 range. The earthquakes are fairly shallow, only a few miles deep.

Although the earthquakes were mild, they caught the attention of scientists.

“They’re all within a very small area,” said Renate Hartog, a seismologist at the University of Wisconsin and network director for the Seismological Network.

Hartog said the earthquake swarm is interesting because it could be in an area with known faults that has no recorded earthquake activity, or it could be a sign of an entirely new fault.

Some small earthquakes were recorded under Mount Josephine in 2003, Hartog said, but these may not be related to the most recent earthquakes.

“These swarms are not well understood,” she said.

Hartog expects seismologists at the University of Washington to continue the investigation.
