Sixty percent of buildings in Iran’s capital “do not comply” with earthquake standards

An Iranian newspaper quoted a risk management official in Tehran as saying that 6 out of 10 of the city’s buildings do not meet seismic standards and will be severely damaged in the event of a major earthquake.

The report, published in Al-Hamshahri newspaper, quoted Reza Karami Mohammadi, head of the city’s risk management department, as saying that 1 in 5 buildings in Tehran would be “completely destroyed” in a major earthquake.

Iran is located on the Iranian plateau at the confluence of the Eurasian plate in the north and the Indian plate in the southeast and is one of the most seismically active countries in the world.

Karami Mohammadi was quoted as saying that “Sixty percent of the buildings do not comply with anti-seismic standards and will be severely damaged” if a 6.5-magnitude or greater earthquake strikes.

He was reportedly speaking at a local council meeting to urge the renewal of the old cityscape of the Iranian capital.

Tehran is home to about 9 million of Iran’s population of 83 million or so.

In 2017, a 7-magnitude earthquake near Iran’s border with Iraq killed nearly 600 people and injured more than 9,000 others.

In 2003, a slightly smaller earthquake killed more than 26,000 people and destroyed much of the historic city of Bam in southern Iran.
