Rice University makes historic selection for its eighth president

An internationally renowned structural engineer and earthquake expert now leads the Ivy League of the South.

Reginald Desroches, who is currently the university’s dean, has been named the next (and only the eighth in history) president of Rice University, the school announced on November 11. Rice’s eighth president when he takes office on July 1, 2022, at the university. This news follows a nationwide search by the Rice Board of Trustees.

His appointment comes as a series of Rice’s first steps: Desroches is the first person of color, the first immigrant (born in Haiti), and the first engineer to lead the school.

De Roches has been a dean since LeBron named him academic president of the university in 2020, according to Rice. Rice credits him with leading the university’s academic, research, scientific, and creative activities through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In less than two years, DesRoches has increased the university’s research awards, launched several new centers and institutes, and fostered new partnerships and programs with institutions and organizations throughout the Houston area, including the Texas Medical Center.

In addition, Desroches created the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, which Rice notes has been instrumental in “dramatically increasing the diversity of Rice’s faculty and graduate students.” He is also driving the first major expansion of the undergraduate student body in more than 10 years.

He joined college in 2017, as William and Stephanie Sick, Dean of Engineering at George R. Brown Engineering. Under his leadership, the student body has grown and partnerships with local and international universities (including work with a think tank in India) have grown.

De Roche was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and raised in Queens, New York City. While studying at the University of California, Berkeley, Desroches witnessed the damage caused by the historic 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. This inspired him to focus on earthquake resistance while pursuing his master’s and doctoral degrees. degrees in structural engineering at Berkeley, according to his resume.
