The tremors in Visakhapatnam were felt as a mild earthquake hitting the city, netizens reported a loud sound

NEW DELHI: Several social media users reported on Sunday morning that they heard a loud sound resembling an explosion in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh and witnessed earthquakes that lasted for a few seconds. The National Center for Seismology later confirmed that an earthquake occurred in Visakhapatnam at 7.13 am with mild tremors measuring 1.8 on the Richter scale. Soon after, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Authority (GVMC) also confirmed the news of an earthquake as it asked people to take “precautionary steps” after the tremors were reported.

Panic was felt across the city at around 7.14am this morning.

It is requested that precautionary steps be taken to avoid the potential earthquake impact. (1/2).

According to reports, the earthquake prompted people in several districts of Visakhapatnam to move out of their homes.

While no official sources have confirmed whether or not the earthquake occurred in the city, the Android Earthquake Alerts System said, “There are reports of shaking in the Visakhapatnam district.” Confirmation of an earthquake by the National Seismology Center came a few hours later.

Volcanodiscovery.com earlier said it had received “unverified early reports of ground shaking” caused by possible “seismic activity” near Vizag.
