4.9 magnitude earthquake hits Jeju Island

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Jeju Island in southern South Korea Tuesday afternoon, according to the government’s meteorological agency, which added that no injuries or major damage were reported.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said the quake occurred at 5:19 p.m. in waters about 41 kilometers off the island’s southwestern city of Seogwipo.

The agency indicated that the epicenter of the quake was at 33.14 degrees north latitude and 126.24 east longitude, at a depth of 17 km. The residents must have felt strong vibrations.

Residents said they saw refrigerators swinging and children running outside their homes in distress.

The National Fire Agency said it had received more than 160 reports of the tremor that could be felt across the country, and two reports of damage – a twisted railing and a broken window – in Jeju.

As of 8:30 p.m., there were nine aftershocks with a magnitude of 1.5 to 1.7, the agency said, adding that there was no tsunami risk. She asked Jeju residents to stay alert for further tremors.

The KMA initially declared the quake to have a magnitude of 5.3 but later revised it to 4.9.

The agency said it was trying to confirm any further reports of damage.

The earthquake was the 11th most powerful earthquake to hit South Korea or beyond in size and the largest to hit the island since record keeping began.

The most powerful earthquake was the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the southeastern city of Gyeongju on September 12, 2016.
